With my week in Oslo behind me and the journey over the Hardangervidda plateau via the Bergen Line complete, I was met in Bergen by our family friend Reagan; I would stay with him and his family at their summer house on the small island of Njoten near Bergen for a week.
While there we would spend our time relaxing, eating, fishing, cruising around the region and doing odd jobs around the house which included helping to mow the lawns which hadn’t been done all winter; that was quite the job!
On account of Njoten not being far from Bergen, we would head in and spent a brilliant day in exploring Bergen (which is rare as its Europe’s wettest city with 200+ days of rain a year) with William (Reagan’s son) and his mate. Did I mention that Norway is expensive! Everything is about twice as much as in NZ, although it’s all relative as their wages are much higher. Still NZD $20 for a Big Mac combo is hard to stomach.
If you visit Bergen, make sure you make it up to the Fløien Mountain View Point which offers outstanding views across Bergen from a height of 399m above the city. You can get there via the Fløibanen which is an electric cable funicular that pulls two wagons between Fløyen and the station in Bergen's city centre. Be sure to wander along the quayside area of Bryggen too which is an UNESCO world heritage district in Bergen. The traditional wooden port buildings are an icon of Bergen and Norway.
