Washington, D.C. is the capital of the United States of America and the seat of its three branches of government, as well as the federal district of the U.S. The city has an unparalleled collection of free, public museums and many of the nation's most treasured monuments and memorials. The vistas on the National Mall between the Capitol, Washington Monument, White House, and Lincoln Memorial are famous throughout the world as icons of the world's wealthiest and most powerful nation - Wikitravel.

DC is an amazing city, especially if you are into world class museums (run by the Smithsonian Institute), American history and monuments.  Eleven of the Nineteen museums and galleries are located at the National Mall in Washington D.C. Did I mention there is no admission to any of them?

Here is a list of the museums and galleries you should consider exploring when you’re in Washington.

There are also tours you can join, I highly recommend getting yourself on the Capitol Hill tour (the seat of the US Government), The US Mint, and the Supreme Court to mention a few.

The photos on this page are from are a variety of places and items such as Capitol Hill, an Easter Island statue inside the Natural History Museum, Inca Gold from the Native Indian Museum, historic aircraft from the Air and Space Museum (including the actual Apollo 11 Command Module), the Iwo Jima Memorial near Arlington cemetery and the Pentagon to highlight a few.

Washington is an absolute must and you need about a good week, at a minimum, to do the place justice.
